ABOUT

Bethany Mitchell, MA is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.  Bethany opened her own private practice with the mission to help individuals improve their mental health and quality of life and to help couples have healthy relationships. Bethany provides individual, couples, and family therapy.

What is my view of therapy? I believe that most people can benefit from therapy at some point in their life.  Therapy provides the opportunity to have a space to process through previous wounds and current blocks that prevent people from living their best life.  Often through the process of guided talk therapy, people will begin to recognize their own strengths.

What is my therapeutic style? I am an empathic, compassionate, direct clinician who works to create a safe space to process through clients’ challenges.  I work collaboratively with a client to recognize their therapeutic goals and the resources they have to achieve them. I value the client/therapist relationship, as I believe it is a key component to healing.

I tend to have an eclectic approach, but I will often focus on the effect of negative cognitions on mood and behavior.  I highly value helping a client achieve additional insight in themselves, their relationships, and their challenges.  I also want to draw attention to the strengths that a client has inherently and help expand a client’s coping skills.  I work to help increase self-awareness and self-acceptance.  I also work with couples as they process relational wounds and increase communication skills.

Who do I work with? I work with adolescents and adults of all ages on a variety of issues.  I have a broad range of experience.  I also work with couples and families to help with communication issues and family/parenting concerns.

I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to make a change in the quality of their lives and who appreciates the value of insight.  I love walking alongside someone as they discover themselves, learn better ways to cope with challenges and heal from past traumas.

What are my specialties? I have worked with a broad range of presenting issues including depression, anxiety, phase of life challenges, poor self-image, grief, infertility and women’s issues.

What is my background? I completed my Master’s of Arts in Counseling Psychology at Trinity International University.  I spent a little bit of time at Alexian Behavioral Health Hospital doing Intake Assessment and determining level of care for patients.  The majority of my experience has been in working with people of all ages in a private practice setting.  I worked for over nine years in a group private practice and transitioned to my own practice in the beginning of 2015.

Is there anything else that is helpful to know about me? For many of my clients, spirituality is an important component in their lives and is an instrument of change.  When desired, I will bring that into the therapeutic setting.  I am married and have three young boys.  I enjoy living in Chicago and especially appreciate the variety of food choices that are so readily available.
